Tinted lantern slides featuring a seated Qing Imperial official surrounded by staff and guards. The guards’ uniforms have been tinted in an Imperial yellow, and display the Chinese character for soldier (bing) on their jerkins. Despite the national chaos that may have been occurring around them, the composition of the image is rigidly ordered – despite the looks of some of the guards to the camera. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
